Epoxy resin for the aquarium - an all-purpose weapon?

Anyone who has ever looked into the forums on the subject of aquaristics, there is often the reference to epoxy resin. Not only the glass panes can be connected to it, but above all additional components made of polystyrene or styrofoam can be built thanks to epoxy resin in any desired shape and size for your own aquarium.

Epoxy resin and its applications
Epoxy resin can seal both metal and wood as well as mineral substrates such as tile adhesive. After complete drying, the surface is completely hard and even has a good impact resistance.

Here are some more applications :

  • Aquarium and terrarium
  • boat building
  • Motorsport
  • Food industry
  • Bathrooms and swimming pools
  • Metallkleber
  • Mortar for stone carpets
  • Architecture in the aquarium

Epoxy resin is completely solid and releases no chemical substances after curing. This makes it ideal in the aquarium to use home-made accessories. Entire landscapes of Styrofoam or polystyrene can be created, which then enrich the life as a back wall or as a landscape in the aquarium.

The polystyrene, for example, can be coated with tile adhesive to give the impression of real stones. Even connecting landscapes of several aquariums can be built in this way. It is possible to let the landscape protrude far beyond the aquarium.

Water landscape with waterfall
Even a stream that splashes from high above the simulated rock face, can be realized thanks to the sealing with epoxy . The epoxy is simply painted over it. It waterproofs the landscape, prevents the formation of mosses and does not damage the water quality.

What to look for when using the epoxy resin in the aquarium?
The most important thing to prevent the epoxy in the aquarium from harming the fish is the drying phase. Before a construction created for the aquarium is submerged in water, not only the general drying time, but at least the curing time specified by the manufacturer on his product must be observed.

TIPS & TRICKS
Work in the basement or in a similarly cold room. You have much longer to process your epoxy resin there . In addition, always mix only small amounts, because the resin can thicken quickly and then not dry well. Thick epoxy lumps can lead to unsightly discoloration on the individual components.
